GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is an innovative two-phase, ferritic, austenitic stainless steel alloy that is meticulously engineered with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most widely utilized duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength that significantly surpasses standard austenitic grades. Renowned for its remarkable fatigue strength, Duplex 2205 also offers outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, making it ideal for use in the most demanding environments.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
- With its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 offers superior corrosion resistance, outclassing 316 and 316L in most environments.
- Enhanced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in aggressive oxidizing and acidic solutions, owing to its chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content.
- Exhibits high resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and can endure temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
- The ferrite phase ensures excellent performance in caustic environments, making Duplex 2205 a versatile choice.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Comparable to other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 features robust oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- Susceptible to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for brief periods; thus, use above 572°F (300°C) is not recommended.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Demonstrates excellent weldability, facilitating versatile application methods.
- Avoid welding without filler metal to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- Optimal annealing temperature range is between 1868 and 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Cannot be hardened through heat treatment but does exhibit work-hardening properties.
- Special attention required to mitigate effects of higher thermal expansion coefficient to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
- Producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature range of 2010 to 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). Ensure uniform temperature distribution to prevent edge cracking in cooler regions of non-compact workpieces.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
- Duplex 2205 is renowned for its exceptional formability across various fabrication processes. However, its high strength can present challenges during manufacturing. Even when using equipment with adequate power, it is essential to account for the increased spring-back due to the grade's high strength.
Machinability
Machining Duplex 2205 presents more challenges than the 300 series austenitic stainless steels, requiring higher cutting forces and leading to quicker tool wear. To optimize machining: A) Utilize powerful, rigid machines with robust tool and work piece mounting, B) Reduce vibration by keeping tool extension minimal, C) Employ a tool nose radius just sufficient for edge sharpness and strength, and D) Design machining sequences to ensure cuts penetrate below the work-hardened layer from previous passes.
Features of 2205 Stainless Steel Coils
- Type 2205 is a superior duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel, enriched with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen to enhance its performance and corrosion resistance compared to 304 and 316 stainless steel. This alloy's balanced austenite/ferrite microstructure, combined with its additives, provides robust resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 withstands oxidation up to 980°C for specific applications but can become brittle when exposed to temperatures of 300°C to 1000°C over extended periods. It is versatile for applications ranging from industrial to marine environments.
Commonly Used Surface Finishes of Stainless Steel Coils
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coil can vary based on cold rolling processes and subsequent surface treatments. Available surface treatments include NO.1, 2B, No.4, HL, No.6, No.8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and more.
- NO.1: NO.1 surface is achieved after hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling, removing black oxide scale. This silvery-white, matte finish is ideal for heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant applications where high surface gloss is unnecessary, such as in the alcohol, chemical industries, and large containers.
- 2B: The 2B surface, brighter than the 2D finish, is achieved with light rolling. It has a surface roughness Ra value of 0.1 to 0.5μm, making it highly adaptable for various applications, including chemical, papermaking, petroleum, medical industries, and building curtain walls.
- TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades like 304 and 301, used for high-strength, high-hardness applications such as railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. This surface leverages austenitic stainless steel's work hardening properties, enhancing strength and hardness through cold rolling without post-rolling annealing. The result is a robust, cold-rolled finish.
- Re-Rolled Bright 2H: Upon completion of the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a bright annealing process. Utilizing a continuous annealing line allows for rapid cooling, ensuring the strip moves at an impressive speed of 60-80m/min. Post-process, the surface finish achieves a 2H re-rolled bright result.
- No. 4: The No. 4 surface boasts excellent polishing capabilities, offering a brighter finish than No. 3. Achieved by polishing a cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface, and further refining with a sanding belt of 150-180# grit, the surface roughness (Ra) measures between 0.2 and 1.5μm. This versatile finish is widely utilized in various domains, including restaurants and culinary equipment, medical instruments, architectural decor, containers, and more.
- HL: The HL, or hairline finish, is defined under the Japanese JIS standard as a continuous hairline abrasive surface, achieved with a 150-240# abrasive belt. The Chinese GB3280 standard is less specific in this regard. HL finish is predominantly used in architectural decoration, including elevators, escalators, and exterior walls, offering a sleek and modern appearance.
- No. 6: Building upon the No. 4 finish, the No. 6 surface is enhanced using a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive material as per the GB2477 standard. This results in a surface with a splendid metallic luster that is soft, with weak reflectivity and no imaging. Its robust performance makes it ideal for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and culinary supplies.
- BA: The BA surface is achieved through bright heat treatment post-cold rolling, in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation, preserving the cold-rolled gloss. Subsequently polished with a high-precision smooth roller, the surface roughness measures between 0.05-0.1μm, nearing a mirror finish. BA surfaces are versatile, suitable for a myriad of applications such as food utensils, household appliances, medical equipment, automotive parts, and decorative elements.
- No. 8: No. 8, also referred to as a mirror surface, offers the highest reflectivity with no abrasive particles. Known in the stainless steel deep processing industry as the 8K board, it is often fabricated from BA material, requiring minimal polishing. The resulting surface is exquisitely beautiful, making it a preferred choice for building entrances and interior decoration.
